Every year, the influenza virus is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people and sickens millions more and at the same time it remains a recurring pandemic threat. Reducing the annual burden of influenza is among the goals set by the World Health Organization (WHO) in their Immunization Agenda 2030 (IA2030). WHO recommends that every country establish annual influenza vaccination programs that can respond not only to seasonal epidemics, but also to the emergence of a virus with pandemic potential. However, most countries—and especially low- and middle-income countries (LMIC)—have yet to achieve the goal set by WHA56. Read the Final Report here.
